Deforestation of the Redwood Forest Abstract

_____The Redwood Forest location is in Northern California. The Redwoods provide moist land for many different organisms and trees such as the Western Red Cedar Tree. The Redwood Forest is being cut down by Maxxam/Pacific Lumber, now Mendocino Redwood Company and is critically endangered. The companies use the technique called clear-cutting to cut down the forest. Clear-cutting is when all of the trees in an area are cut down. The companies keep cutting the forest before the forest can reproduce and grow more trees before the next cut. Clear cutting can be beneficial because it enhances food availability and protection for small animals. For the past five years, Mendocino Redwood Company has cut down over 200,000 acres of the Redwood Forest. Currently, the Timber Industry Investors and Conservation Interests are trying to get the coalition's proposal approved. This proposal will keep about 200,000 acres of the forest protected from being cut down. However, this proposal only protects a number of trees from being cut down.
_____A possible solution is to create or add to the logging companies policy to have restrictions on the way they cut down the forest. These restrictions include time periods when companies can cut down the forest and logging companies should try recuduced-impact logging. Companies can see if the technique is beneficial to business and apply the techniques when they cut trees. The number of trees should be recorded and the area cleared should be measured at every cutting session to show the progress of the company. The time periods between cutting should be long enough for at least half of the area clear-cutted can be regrown.

In Defense of Food

For this assignment we had to answer two questions after reading and article.

1. Why do people choose to eat products that are unhealthy for them?

2. What roles/responsibilities does the gov't have in framing your choice?
(Should they be responsible for educating us? should they be responsible for managing all products we consume? GM included, plastic chemicals - poisonous additives)

_____There are several reasons that people eat products that are unhealthy for them. One reason is because they don't know it is unhealthy for them. Most of the food we eat has a food label on them, a lot of people don't know how to read them. I didn't know how to read them until I came to HTHI. Three years ago I didn’t know what I was eating. Over the years of having different food projects I have learned what was in my food and started to make better choices. Another reason is that it’s cheap and taste good. If the healthier foods were cheaper I think people would eat them more. I enjoy the healthier foods, but sometimes it’s expensive in the long run. The food that America mass produces is cheaper, but it can be unhealthy for you. For example GM (Genetically Mortified) crops are grown in monocultures and use a lot of pesticides. They also contain genes from other organisms, the health factors are unknown. The pesticides get into the water and cause other health problems.

_____I think that the government should provide easy ways to be educated about food. I also think that the government should have to companies label if the food is a GM, organic or whether the product comes from a corn feed animal. So people can choice what type food they want to eat. Products should tell you if the product was grown using pesticides and other chemicals, because whatever chemicals that are in the product could make the consumer sick.

Sociology Experiment

The last couple weeks we have been studying sociology. As an experiment we were to be deviant from one of societies "norms". My group realized that it is normal for toddlers to throw temper tantrums, but we wanted to test if society would react any differently to an adult throwing a tantrum. We dressed professionally and went around San Diego filming eachother throwing tantrums.

America Interfering with other Countries

The U.S interferences with other counties problems depend on the situation. I think the U.S should get involved if the country asks for help. Sometimes the U.S gets into other countries business when they do want our help. For example, Vietnam didn’t want our help when it was going communist. The U.S did more damage than helping. I also think the U.S consider interfering with a country when a natural disaster accurse. When the tsunami hit the coast of Indonesia, the U.S supported the counties affected by sending supplies and volunteers.

Barder and the Flying Turban

Write a story to the visual you see. Assume the dog's name is Barder, and that the orange turban gives him the power of flight…

_____Barder was a lonely dog and didn't have anyone to play with. Everyday he would walk the streets looking for someone to play with, whenever he would see someone, he would run to them joyfully. Everyone always got scared of him and ran away. One day when Barder was walking down the street he saw a little boy wearing an orange turban walking down the street. Barder slowly approached the boy, but the boy didn't run away. The boy slowly reached to pet Barder on the head. He knew the boy wanted to play.

"Hi, my name is Xander. I'm looking for someone to play with, do you want to play?"

Barder barked loudly. They ran up and down the streets chasing each other. When they stopped to rest Xander said to the dog:

"Do you want to do something really fun? See this turban I am wearing, it grants the power of flight. Do you want to fly?"

Barder licked Xander's hand indicating yes. The boy climbs onto Barder's back. Slowly and smoothly they lift into the air. Barder and Xander fly high over the city, over the clouds and into the stars.

Reverse Writing

For this assignment we suppose to choose a photo from Bill Sullivan's Turnstile Photography Project and write a short story about that person. The short was to narrate what happened either before or after they passed through the trunstile.

_____Andrea woke up early to study for a test. She was a good student, she wanted to be a socialogist. Before Andrea started to study she got dressed, washed up in the bathroom and put on her hijab. After she ate a small breakfast of a bagel and orange juice. While she was eating she began to study and lost track of time. Two hours into studying, she gets a phone call from Jessie, her best friend.

"Where are you? Your were suppose to meet me at Starbucks to help me study, remember?"
"I'm so sorry. I started studying and lost track of time. There's still time I'm on my way."

Andrea closed her notebook and headed for the door to her apartment. She immediatly turns around to grab her notebook.

"I can't forget this." And rushes out the door.

She runs to the stairs and takes them down two at a time. The station was two blocks from the apartment. Andrea waited patiently to cross the busy street. She made her way across the street and quickly headed for the station. Andrea rushed down the stairs. A few feet from the turnstile, she got another call from Jessie.

"I'm almost there. I'm about to get on the train."

She could hear Jessie crying. As she went through the turnstile she asks:
"Jessie what's wrong?"
